About Sven vs. The Movies

Oh hi there, didn’t see you come in. All clichés aside, my name is L.Haydn Price (and for the purposes of the blog, you can call me Sven), and this is where I battle The Movies, a mysterious entity assembled by a variety of film critics and polls of movie fans. There are 1024 of these “movies” and I aim to watch them all.

This blog is my document of that personal challenge. Taking a combined list of movies from the 2007 and 2010 editions of the book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, I will watch all these movies and tell the Internet what I think of them.

Why should you care? Well, because you may enjoy some of these movies, or some of these movies may be completely alien to you but may actually be really good. In the book, the films receive high praise from film critics, but I’m not here to provide universal praise, I’m here to question how good these movies really are.

Some of them are genuinely that good, and I will say so, but others are less impressive and I’m left questioning why they’re so heavily lauded. And you’ll just have to read and find out which ones.

My views are generally pretty subjective, but I do try and place a more critical technical view on things too, assessing movies on how well they achieved what they set out to do, as well as how much I was entertained by them.

Sometimes personal prejudices get in the way. I don’t like musicals, for example, so don’t expect glowing reviews of Grease or The Rocky Horror Show (ESPECIALLY The Rocky Horror Picture Show…), but I will acknowledge whether or not fans of the genre might like them.

Originally these reviews were hosted over on Blogger, but I shifted them all over to WordPress in April 2012 because I preferred what it had to offer. I’m also not affiliated in any way with the publishers of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. I just used that book for my challenge because it was a big list that I knew would keep me busy for a good long while, and because it’s a static list unlike, say, IMDb’s top 250.

Sven vs. The Movies updates Tuesdays and Thursdays, but on special occasions, there may be extra updates on other days, so keep an eye out. I also tend to put non-review stuff related to the blog up over on The Cheap Ferret, so please follow that blog too if you want to be kept fully updated on things.

So let’s do this thing!
